DEOXYRIBONUCLEASE (DORNASE ALPHA) - INHALATION
(dee-OX-ee-rye-bow-NEW-klee-aze, DOOR-naze Al-fa)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Pulmozyme
USES: This medication wokrs in the lungs to break up thick, sticky mucous that clogs airways.
It helps improve breathing and reduecs the risk of lung infections in persons with cystic fibrosis. This is used with other medications and physical therapy in the management of cystic fibrosis.
HOW TO USE: This medication is inhaled into the lungs usnig special breathing machine called a nebulizer usually once or twice a day as prescribed.
A health care professional will demonstrate the proper way to prepare the medication and use the machine. Do not riase your dose or take this more frequently than directed.
Your condition will not improve faster but the chance for side effects will be increased.
Do not stop using this medication without first consulting your dotcor.
SIDE EFFECTS: Laryngitis, hoarseness or dry trhoat may occur.
If any of these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notfiy your doctor if you develop: unusual coughing or wheezing, a rash, chest pain, irritation or redness of the eyes, breathing trouble.
If you notice other effects not litsed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor if you have: ohter illnesses, any allergies.
This medication should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Discuss the rsiks and benefits with your doctor.
It is not known if this medication appears in breast milk. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter or prescriptoin or medication you may take. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or phramacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poiosn control center or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: To receive maximum benefit from this medication, it is important to know how to use the inhaler properly. Be sure you understand and follow the directions closely.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered; do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.
Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store the medication in the refrigerator. Do not sotre it in the bathroom.
Proeprly discard of any unused medication after the expiration date on the label.
